"Words can break someone into a million pieces, but they can also put them back together. I hope you use yours for good, because the only words you’ll regret more than the ones left unsaid are the ones you use to intentionally hurt someone."

  • Question: Pro-Choice or Pro-Life? - Anonymous
  • Answer:

I’m glad someone’s asked me this because it’s made me have a really deep and meaningful think about this.

To be 100% honest with you. I used to be pro-life. I’m a raised Catholic, I believed aborting a child’s life even when it was still inside the womb is wrong. It shouldn’t be done. It was a sin. You should take responsibility for your actions and what you do with your body. That baby in your stomach was yours and therefore it was your responsibility to take care of it and raise it not just have it removed from your womb like a mole would be removed from your skin,

But then I grew up. I started to learn about rape and what rape was. I learnt how a woman can have sexual intercourse forced upon her. An act she never wanted and she can end up pregnant from that. Not only would she have to carry that child around in her stomach for nine months but she’d also have to go the rest of her life knowing that she gave birth to a child that she didn’t want, she’d also have to go the rest of her life knowing she was raped and that resulted in a child. Even if she gave the child up for adoption she’d still always have that lingering thought in her mind that she was raped and she had a child out of that rape. Possibly long before she’d ever wanted a child. I also understood some people are just clueless when it came to safe sex and it’s practices.

So when I got to this stage I was on the bench, I was confused. My religion was telling me one thing where as my heart and my soul and my natural instinct as a woman was telling me another. My religion was pleading with me, Reminding me that God has a plan for us. That he dictates our life for a reason and all these events that happened in our life made up a bigger plan. So In one mindset I hated abortion I was still pro-life, Then in my heart and my soul I was beginning to know what I meant to be a woman. To walk down the street with catcalls being thrown at you to have men think that you are someone to be dominated no matter what you think. That’s when I started to think with my heart and I understood why people would turn to abortion.

It wasn’t up until a few year’s ago when my friend was new to sex and having a sexual relationship with a man that my mind was ever truly made up about what I stood for Pro-Choice or Pro-Life. My friend didn’t understand how sex worked. She knew the basic’s due to sex ed in school but not nearly enough and she had a pregnancy scare. Somehow I’d thought it through and put myself into her position. If I was in her position and I was pregnant or thought I was pregnant. Would I be able to go through with this pregnancy? The answer was clear. No. I would not be able to. I was not equipped and I didn’t have a strong understanding of life and I was far too young to deal with a child. That’s how I decided that I was Pro-Choice. Over the year’s my Pro-Choice stance grew and grew. Now I also understand that a woman’s body is her own. She can do with it what she will. She can get done to it whatever she will and no man will ever own a woman’s body. Because by the time you turn eighteen. You are an adult. That body doesn’t belong to your parents anymore it is yours and it is in your right to do with it what you will.
